| Schools with Multiple Teams Schools with multiple teams (more than one team in a single division) have been permitted to compete for several years in Alabama Science Olympiad. This increase in membership is what has allowed Alabama to qualify two teams in both Division B and C for Nationals. Each team must have a coach (rule is one coach-one team) and submit a separate registration form with registration fee to the state director. Teams must be identified as Team 1, 2, 3 etc., A, B, C…, or blue, red, white (such as school colors). It is suggested that teams wear different color shirts and wrist bands to assist the event judges. If two students from same school, but on different teams, compete as a team in the same event, this would result in a DQ. Each year Division B and C teams may compete at one regional and, if qualified, may advance to the state tournament. Teams from the same division and school must compete at the same tournament. In states allowed to qualify two teams for the national tournament, the qualifying teams cannot be from the same school. At the State competition, should first and second place winners be from the same school, then first and third would qualify. If third was also from same school as first, then selection would continue down the ranks until there is a team from a different school.Schools with Multiple Teams - Day of Tournament Procedures Each team, not each school, must have a separate adult register the team on day of the tournament. This individual will receive a wrist band that identifies him/her as coach of one team. Only this individual may question an event supervisor or file an appeal. If a school has more than one team, the coach may only ask questions about the ONE team he/she coaches. Since each team from a school will have different colored wrist bands, a “conflict” between a coach and a team will be apparent from conflicting colored wrist bands. Coaches for all teams need not be teachers at the school; they may be parents or members from the community. Ideally each team will be assigned a separate home room (base). However, schools with more than one team may share the home room. 9th Grade Team Members - Choice of B or C As many as five 9th graders having participated as middle schoolers, may decide to participate with their middle/junior high team their ninth grade year, or they may decide to participate with their high school team. It is the student’s choice, but they must decide on one division, either B or C for that academic year. |
